What Esport Should I Play?

What Esport Should I Play?

When it comes to picking an esport, it’s all about what you like most. Here are the main options.

First-Person Shooters

These types of esports are extremely popular because they’re both fun and easy to learn. Examples include CS:GO, Valorant, Call of Duty, Rainbox Six Siege, and Overwatch. Of course, the better you become at them, the more you realize that they’re actually very difficult to master. But if you aren’t interested in spending hundreds of hours just to learn the basics, these are the games for you.

MOBAs

This is the other extreme. MOBA games like League of Legends and Dota 2 are incredibly difficult not just to master, but also to understand. There are somewhere between 500 and 1000 notions to grasp in each of them and the process takes hundreds or even thousands of hours.

MOBA games offer a satisfying mix of RPG and RTS elements. You get to pick a hero or a champion, you level up, you’re teamed up with 4 other players and you compete against an enemy team on a two-sided map. The goal is to destroy the other side’s base. In the process, you gain gold and experience, buy powerful items and get to fight a lot. There’s a lot to be learned but if you enjoy RPG and RTS games, you’ll probably love it.

Real-Time Strategy Games

In this category, we have esports like StarCraft 2, WarCraft 3, and Age of Empires 2. These types of games are well-suited for the solo-minded player. If you don’t like losing because of your teammates and want to depend just on yourself, the RTS genre is probably for you. As you might expect, this is not a popular genre these days, because it’s a lot more fun to compete in a team versus team format. But if you don’t mind the lack of human interaction, go ahead.

Fighting Games

Esports in this category are also well-suited for those who prefer a solo experience. Apart from that, it’s easy to guess what they’re all about: fighting until someone has no HP left. The most popular titles in this genre are Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Super Smash Bros, and Street Fighter.

The Most Popular Esports In New Zealand And Australia

In New Zealand and Australia, people love CS:GO, Rocket League, Hearthstone, League of Legends, Dota 2, Overwatch, and FIFA. If you compete in any of these games, you will find plenty of people that share your passion and professional teams that can help you take it to the next level.

In particular, CS:GO is hugely popular in these countries. Another thing worth mentioning is that Australia has one of the most successful Dota 2 players in the history of the game. Anathan “ana” Pham won two world championships (“The International”) with OG in 2018 and 2019, and his success helped many people in the region discover this beautiful esport.
