The 2024 NZ Esports Gamer Survey has provided fresh insights into the habits of New Zealand’s gaming community, reinforcing what many gamers already knew, being an esports player doesn’t mean being inactive or isolated. The data highlights that esports players lead physically active lifestyles and build strong social connections through gaming.
Gamers are More Active Than You Think
One of the most eye-opening insights is the high level of physical activity among gamers. On average, they engage in 7.8 hours of physical activity per week, significantly surpassing the national adult average of 4.8 hours (Active NZ Report, Sport NZ). This indicates that gamers are 70% more active than the typical New Zealander. Their activities range from gym workouts and running to participation in both team and individual sports.
Jonathan Jansen, CEO of NZ Esports, says the findings help correct outdated perceptions:
“There’s long been an assumption that gamers are inactive, but this data confirms what we’ve seen in the community for years. Esports players are engaged, competitive, and physically active.”
Gaming is Social, and It’s Bringing People Together
Beyond physical activity, the survey highlights the role of esports in fostering social relationships.
A significant portion of gamers reported building meaningful friendships through gaming, with many playing alongside both online and real-life friends. This underscores the community-building aspect of esports, bridging gaps and bringing individuals together.
Jansen further notes:
“The digital world isn’t a metaphor; it’s a real place where gamers are choosing to socialise. This data helps show that the bonds made are real and extend into the physical world.”
